Humans have long been fascinated by the concept of artificial intelligence (AI). It’s been the subject of many stories and works of art throughout history — far before the term AI was ever coined. Greek mythology tells the tale of Talos, a giant made of bronze who protected the island of Crete. In the 15th century, Swiss alchemist and philosopher Paracelsus wrote “Of the Nature of Things,” in which he describes a procedure that can fabricate an “artificial man.” By the 19th century, biological AI started to show up in works of fiction, like Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

Today, AI is creating its own art. Staffers at Axios recently used an AI image generation tool called Dall-E 2 to try to reproduce some visuals to varying levels of success. It sparked a debate: What’s the difference between an editorial illustration developed by a human being and a visual composite generated by AI?

In this episode of Crypto Insider, Allison Brickell and Vin Narayanan explore this question and the broader implications of AI in the art world — including how NFTs fit in.
